The CSSC/SCEBD membership has voted to join the CFHSS

Dear colleagues,

I am writing to inform you of the results of the recent, online vote we held on the proposal to join the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Thanks to everyone who joined in the discussion at the AGM and online for ensuring there was a robust debate on the pros and cons of this important change.

I am very pleased to announce that 55% of our active members voted, meeting the quorum requirements for online voting set out in our constitution. Out of 41 eligible ballots, 24 were cast in favour of the proposal and 17 against. The proposal to join the CFHSS and begin holding our annual conferences as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences passes. The executive will contact the Federation and begin making the necessary arrangements with an eye to being part of Congress 2019 at the University of British Columbia. A CFP with all the details will be released in due course.

I know I speak for everyone involved in the CSSC/SCEBD when I say that we value our relationship with the TCAF and our Toronto roots in the New Narrative conferences. The vote was very close, and many members were ambivalent about this decision, but I hope you will give us a chance in this new chapter for our Society. For those of you who can’t make it to Vancouver next June and are looking for another Toronto-area comics studies conference, I’d like to point out that the Comics Studies Society will be holding their second conference at Ryerson University in August 2019, so keep an eye out for that CFP, too.

Always forward. Forward, always.

Benjamin Woo
